In 2012 we changed our name from Washington Wilderness Coalition to Washington Wild to better reflect the need to protect not only our wild lands, but our wild, free-flowing rivers as well. Since expanding our mission, we have applied the same dogged coalition building that has protected more than 3 million acres of Wilderness to a similar effect for Washington’s wild waters.
Past accomplishments include the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Additions which increased the amount of river mileage protected as Wild & Scenic statewide by 20%, defending the Skagit Headwaters from mining threats, and founding the federal Legacy Roads and Trails remediation program which protects and restores watershed health within our national forests.
Current initiatives include our Wild Olympics proposal which upon approval by Congress will designate 460 miles of Wild & Scenic Rivers, working to see the Cascade, Green, and Napeequa Rivers designated as Washington's first-ever Outstanding Resource Waters under the Clean Water Act, and the campaign to prevent the extinction of our salmon and Southern Resident Orcas and honor Tribal Treaty Rights by breaching the four Lower Snake River dams.
